I spent a wonderful weekend with 2 long-time friends and family at the Oregon coast. This was a Reunion of sorts with 2 of my earliest influencers on my design and illustration career.
DJ Stout was my first boss at a design firm in Dallas Tx. He had faith in me - as a greenhorn with my fresh BFA in hand and a lot of enthusiasm, he took a chance on me and I was hired on at Robert A. Wilson Associates - a corporate design firm. His classic - thoughtful - story style design, helped mold my thinking side, while his unprecedented presentation style to the corporate shirts was mesmerizing to take in and behold. Great memories and moments past. DJ, left that design firm and went to Texas Monthly for 15 yrs as an award-winning AD. Now he is the Austin contingency of Pentagram. Not a bad choice in mentors I would say.
David Simpson, also a designer at Robert A Wilson Asso., we designed along side one-another in that studio, trying to soak in as much as we could from DJ and other seasoned designers in those early days. David and I spent many long hours - with spray mount and T-Squares - many moons ago. He later migrated to the PNW as I did. He worked as a designer for MicroSoft for a good while. He now pursues his own Fine Art work as a sculptor and printmaker.
I am lucky to know these 2 extraordinary fellows and to call them mentors and friends.
Note to those who are starting out in your careers; those earliest encounters will probably shape you in ways you will not realize. And they may very well last a life-time. I am so lucky that they did for me.
